Air Canada flights resume Sunday as govt intervenes, end strike

Air Canada said it will restart operations on Sunday after the Canadian government intervened to end a strike that grounded hundreds of flights and stranded more than 100,000 passengers worldwide.

In a statement, the airline confirmed the Canadian Industrial Relations Board directed flight attendants at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge to return to work by 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The decision followed an order from Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu, who on Saturday mandated binding arbitration to resolve the contract impasse and extended the current labor agreement until a new deal is reached.

Roughly 10,000 flight attendants walked off the job on Saturday, marking their first strike since 1985.

The action forced Air Canada to suspend about 700 daily flights, with cancellations beginning Friday in anticipation of the walkout.

The dispute, which had dragged on for months without agreement, underscores rising labour tensions in North America’s aviation sector as unions push for improved pay and working conditions amid strong travel demand.
