The Nigerian Communications Commission has outlined nine practical tips to help Nigerians manage their data usage and prevent fast depletion, following widespread complaints from subscribers who allege that service providers are siphoning their data.
Although both the Commission and telecom operators have consistently dismissed these claims, the NCC explained that rapid technological advancements have introduced new smartphone features that many users may not fully understand.
According to the Commission, this knowledge gap often leads to unintentional high data consumption, leaving subscribers frustrated and undermining their trust.
The Commission, in a guide it termed “Smart Data Management Tips,” advised Nigerians to adopt the following measures to better control data consumption on their mobile devices:
Monitor Data Usage: Regularly track data usage with in-built phone features or third-party apps.
Use Wi-Fi: Connect to Wi-Fi networks whenever available to save mobile data.
Turn Off Automatic Updates: Disable automatic updates for apps and software, opting instead for manual updates over Wi-Fi.
Restrict Background Data: Limit background data usage for selected apps.
Download for Offline Use: Save media and other content while on Wi-Fi to access them later offline.
Enable Data Caching: Store frequently accessed files locally to avoid repeated downloads.
Disable Location Services: Turn off GPS or restrict location access for certain apps.
Activate Data-Saving Mode: Switch on your phone’s data-saver setting to reduce consumption.
Use Data Rollover: Carry over unused data into the next billing cycle when your provider offers the option.
The Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau at the NCC, Mrs. Freda Bruce-Bennett stated that the Commission has conducted a dedicated study to address subscribers’ complaints regarding data depletion.
She added that the Commission has taken proactive measures by promoting data usage transparency initiatives and enforcing fair usage policies, while also maintaining ongoing engagements with service providers to improve the overall Quality of Experience across the industry.
“These efforts are directly tied to the broader goal of promoting effective Data management. It is important that telecom subscribers are equipped with the knowledge of how to monitor, control, and optimize the usage of their mobile data bundle allowance, be it daily, weekly, or monthly plans,” she said.
Bruce-Bennett further noted that multiple factors can influence the speed at which a subscriber’s data is consumed.
