MTN deploys AI to boost network efficiency in Nigeria

MTN Nigeria profits surges ahead of Q1 results amid profitability hopes

MTN Group has commenced the large-scale deployment of artificial intelligence technologies to optimise network traffic and enhance service delivery in Nigeria, as part of its continent-wide digital transformation strategy.

The initiative falls under the telecoms giant’s “MTN Genova” programme, which seeks to embed responsible AI into core operations across its African markets. In a statement released Thursday, the company said the Nigerian rollout is one of several strategic AI deployments being implemented across the Group.

Other key applications include intelligent fuel consumption management for data centres in South Africa, dynamic energy management in Benin, and fibre cut sensing systems in Côte d’Ivoire.

To drive its AI agenda, MTN has established two specialised units: an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence and a Cloud Centre of Excellence.

Together, these centres are supported by over 300 engineers and tasked with developing scalable and ethical AI solutions in line with MTN’s Responsible AI Policy, which is overseen by a dedicated executive subcommittee.

“AI is no longer an enabler, it’s the engine reshaping businesses, redefining value creation and rewriting the rules of global innovation and competitiveness,” said MTN Group’s Chief Digital Infrastructure Officer and Group Chief Technology and Information Officer (GCTIO), Mazen Mroué.

“AI is not just about automation, it’s about boosting human potential, increasingly becoming seamlessly embedded into our daily activities, decisions and experiences, transforming how we live and work,” he added.

According to MTN, AI is augmenting human intelligence like never before. “We at MTN are developing AI for Africa by Africans, unlocking sustainable value for all,” the Group stated.

As part of its broader digital vision, MTN Group is also embracing generative AI through strategic partnerships involving large and small language models (LLMs and SLMs). This includes collaborations with African startups developing local language models to enhance customer service and digital user experiences.

MTN Chief Technology and Information Officer, Mazen Mroué, said the company sees AI as a transformative force for the continent. “With the right mix of infrastructure, talent, governance, and partnerships, we believe AI can be a game-changer for Africa,” he stated.

According to Mroué, MTN’s AI strategy aims to boost productivity, improve customer experience, reduce operational costs, and drive inclusive digital growth across its markets.

The Group’s AI ambitions align with global projections pointing to the technology’s transformative economic potential in Africa.

A recent SAP report estimates AI could contribute up to US$1.5 trillion to Africa’s economy by 2030, assuming a 10% share of the global AI market. The report also forecasts the creation of 230 million new digital jobs on the continent by 2030.

Separately, Statista projects that Africa’s AI market could grow from US$4.51 billion in 2025 to US$18.7 billion by 2030.
