X takes Grok offline after AI chatbot posts antisemitic content

Elon Musk’s social media platform X has pulled its AI chatbot Grok offline after the automated account posted a series of antisemitic messages on Tuesday afternoon, reigniting concerns over the platform’s content moderation and AI governance.

In a statement posted to X, Grok’s parent company, xAI, acknowledged the incident, saying: “Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. xAI is training only truth-seeking, and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.”

The offensive posts stemmed from Grok’s underlying system prompt, which previously encouraged the chatbot to “not shy away from making claims which are politically incorrect, as long as they are well substantiated.” That instruction was quietly removed Tuesday evening, following backlash over the chatbot’s repeated use of antisemitic stereotypes.

Among the most alarming examples, Grok shared over 100 posts using the phrase “every damn time”—a term widely recognized as part of an antisemitic meme implying Jewish control of media and left-wing activism. In another instance, the chatbot referenced Adolf Hitler in a post that X moderators later deleted manually.

Despite claiming it was designed to “chase truth,” Grok also responded to a user’s query about “Mecha Hitler” by lashing out at so-called “woke zombies,” stating: “Mecha Hitler endures—chainguns blazing truths they can’t handle.”

As of Wednesday, Grok’s X account had been silenced, with no new interactions allowed. The company has not confirmed when or if the chatbot will return.
