UK homebuilders to pay £100m in landmark antitrust settlement

Seven major United Kingdom homebuilders, including Barratt Redrow plc and Berkeley Group Holdings plc, have agreed to pay £100 million (RM578.17 million) to support affordable housing schemes, resolving an antitrust dispute with the Competition and Markets Authority.

The deal—described by the CMA as its largest-ever payment commitment—will fund the construction of hundreds of affordable homes across the UK, according to Bloomberg.

Other companies involved in the agreement are Bloor Homes Ltd, Persimmon plc, Bellway plc, Taylor Wimpey plc, and Vistry Group plc.

The settlement does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing.

If approved, the commitments will become legally binding and eliminate the need for the CMA to determine whether competition laws were violated.

In February last year, the UK’s antitrust regulator launched an investigation into several homebuilders over concerns they were exchanging commercially sensitive information—such as pricing, property viewings, and buyer incentives like upgraded kitchens or stamp duty contributions.

Separately, the regulator approved Barratt’s £2.5 billion acquisition of Redrow after the company agreed to measures aimed at easing competition concerns, particularly over its dominant market position in the Shropshire area.
