JetBlue tops US airlines for wheelchair accessibility – Report

JetBlue, an American airline has emerged the top-ranked airline for wheelchair accessibility.

A recent study by InsureMyTrip, analyzed data from the United States Department of Transportation’s Air Travel Consumer Report to evaluate how well U.S. airlines accommodate passengers using wheelchairs.

The study considered the number of mishandled wheelchairs and scooters, customer reviews mentioning “wheelchair,” and social media sentiment to rank airlines.

JetBlue has been recognized as the top airline for wheelchair accessibility, receiving a 97% positive sentiment rating in the survey.

The airline handled 29,147 wheelchairs and other mobility devices in 2024.

Delta Airlines also earned high marks for accessibility, reporting the lowest rate of mishandled wheelchairs. The airline is currently developing an innovative seat design that will allow passengers to remain in their own wheelchairs during flights.

Alaska Airlines ranked third for wheelchair accessibility, earning praise for its commitment to serving passengers with mobility needs.

Frontier Airlines ranked lowest for wheelchair accessibility, receiving the highest percentage of negative sentiment and the most one-star reviews related to wheelchair issues.

American Airlines and Spirit Airlines also scored poorly.

In 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation fined American Airlines $50 million over its treatment of passengers using wheelchairs.

With over five million Americans traveling with wheelchairs—many of which cost thousands of dollars—the risk of damage or mishandling makes flying with certain airlines a costly and stressful experience.

“Air travel should be accessible for everyone, but that’s far from the reality. We hope this study shines a light on which airlines are getting it right and which have room for improvement—so wheelchair users can make an informed decision when booking a flight,” Sara Boisvert, director of marketing at InsureMyTrip, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure.
