YouTube tests two-person premium subscription in select countries

YouTube has begun testing a new two-person Premium subscription plan in select markets, the company confirmed on Monday.

The pilot program is currently being rolled out in India, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, with the aim of offering more flexible and affordable access to its premium services.

The development, first reported by Money Control and confirmed by TechCrunch, introduces a subscription tier that allows two individuals living at the same address to share a YouTube Premium account at a reduced price. This offering mirrors Spotify’s Duo plan, which caters to couples or roommates who wish to avoid the cost of a full family plan.

“We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers,” a YouTube spokesperson told TechCrunch. “This includes offering a two-person Premium plan option in some countries, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost.”

The initiative is seen as a strategic move to both attract new users and win back subscribers who may have left due to recent price hikes. By targeting users who seek ad-free content and features like background play but find existing plans too expensive, YouTube hopes to expand its paid user base.

The test follows YouTube’s broader efforts to diversify its subscription offerings. In March, the Google-owned platform introduced a “Premium Lite” tier in the United States, Australia, Germany, and Thailand. Priced at \$7.99 per month, it offers ad-free viewing on most videos but omits features like offline downloads and music streaming.

As of this year, YouTube reported that subscriptions to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music collectively surpass 125 million users globally, including those on trial periods.

There is no word yet on whether the two-person plan will be expanded beyond the current trial countries or made permanent.
