SpaceX’s Starbase poised to gain city status in Texas vote

SpaceX’s South Texas hub, known as Starbase, is poised to become an official city following a Sunday vote by local residents to incorporate the area previously called Boca Chica Village, according to BBC.

The move to establish Starbase as a municipality is being driven largely by SpaceX employees, who dominate the small voter base.

Preliminary results show strong support for incorporation among the 283 eligible voters, most of whom are SpaceX employees or closely tied to the company. Cameron County election records indicate at least 200 residents voted by the end of early voting on Tuesday.

Notably, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who voted in the county in November, was not listed among early voters, and it remains unclear if he will cast a ballot.

As of 7 p.m. on Saturday (local time), 177 votes had been counted, with 173 supporting the creation of the city of Starbase, according to the New York Times.

Following the favorable election results for SpaceX, a new municipality will be formed in Texas, enabling the creation of a local government with a mayor and two commissioners empowered to oversee planning, taxation, and other civic responsibilities.

However, some local residents have opposed the creation of the new municipality under the name Starbase, accusing SpaceX of damaging the local environment.

Starbase serves as the primary launch site and facility for SpaceX’s ambitious rocket program, which holds contracts with NASA and the Department of Defense.

The company aims to return astronauts to the moon and eventually send missions to Mars.

According to the BBC, the proposed city of Starbase spans approximately 1.6 square miles (3.9 square kilometers) and had a notably small population until SpaceX began acquiring land in the area.

Musk first introduced the concept of Starbase in 2021.
