OpenAI’s massive AI infrastructure initiative, known as Stargate, may soon stretch beyond U.S. borders.

The $500 billion project is backed by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank is considering international investments, with potential sites in the U.K., Germany, and France, according to a new report from the Financial Times.

Launched earlier this year, Stargate was initially framed as a bold move to bolster American dominance in artificial intelligence. The project includes the construction of cutting-edge AI data centers and supporting infrastructure across the United States.

While the U.S. remains the core focus for now, sources told the Financial Times that talks around overseas expansion are gaining traction. The shift signals a growing ambition to establish a more global footprint for AI development.

Stargate is still in the early stages of financing, currently working to raise its first $100 billion. SoftBank is expected to contribute a significant portion of that through a combination of debt and equity.

President Donald Trump previously hailed the initiative during its January unveiling, calling it a “declaration of confidence in America’s future in AI.” The prospect of international expansion, however, suggests that Stargate may soon play a larger role in shaping the global AI race.
