OpenAI is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire Windsurf, an AI-powered coding assistant formerly known as Codeium, for approximately $3 billion.

Bloomberg was the first to report the potential deal, citing a source familiar with the discussion.

OpenAI is accelerating its efforts to maintain a lead in the competitive generative AI space, where rivals like Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI are making significant investments and frequently launching new products.

In a major move late last month, OpenAI secured a record-setting $40 billion funding round, boosting its valuation to $300 billion—the highest ever for a private tech company.

On Wednesday, OpenAI unveiled its newest AI models, o3 and o4-mini, which it claims can “think with images.”

These models are designed to interpret and analyze user sketches and diagrams—even low-quality ones—marking a step forward in visual reasoning capabilities.

If a deal with Windsurf goes through, it would mark OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date.

Previously, the company has made smaller acquisitions, such as its June purchase of analytics database provider Rockset and the video collaboration platform Multi.

Windsurf is among the tools, including Cursor and Replit, that developers have turned to recently for “vibe coding,” a process where AI models quickly generate code for new software.
