US probes engine failure risk in over 870,000 GM trucks

General Motors

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated a preliminary investigation into more than 870,000 General Motors vehicles, including full-size pickup trucks and SUVs, due to concerns about potential engine failure.

The probe is focused on V8 engines in models such as the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, and the Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade SUVs, covering model years from 2019 to 2024.

The NHTSA has stated that engine failure in these vehicles could lead to a loss of power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The agency has received 39 complaints regarding the issue, though none of the incidents resulted in injuries.

The complaints reported by drivers suggest a bearing failure that could cause either the engine to seize or a connecting rod to breach the engine block.

According to NHTSA, there are no warning signs of the defect before the engine failure occurs.

General Motors has not yet provided a comment regarding the investigation or the reported engine issues.
