The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative in collaboration with key transport unions, has launched a partnership to introduce hybrid high-capacity CNG buses in Abuja.
This initiative, facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Transport, involves unions like NARTO, RTEAN, and NURTW.
The goal is to provide affordable, environmentally friendly transportation with discounted fares on selected routes.
The signing ceremony, held on Wednesday, was highlighted as a major milestone in improving Abuja’s public transport system and advancing environmental sustainability.
The PCNGI confirmed the event through a post on its official X account.
“Signing ceremony of Clean Bus Partnership Agreement between PI-CNG and the Transport Unions (NARTO, RTEAN and NURTW), brokered by Federal Ministry of Transport, whereby hybrid high capacity CNG buses are being deployed in Abuja for discounted fares on published routes,” the statement read.
The PCNGI’s post did not disclose the specific routes or discount rates for the new CNG buses. Further details on these aspects are expected to be announced soon.
The Federal Government, via the PCNGI, is actively promoting the transition to CNG in Abuja. This effort aims to lower transport costs and enhance environmental sustainability.
The PCNGI recently signed an agreement with taxi operators at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to convert 800 petrol-powered vehicles in the airport’s taxi fleet to CNG.
This initiative aims to lower shuttle fares by 30%, aligning with efforts to reduce costs and promote sustainability.
The 30% fare reduction will commence once 50% of the airport taxi fleet, around 400 vehicles, has been converted to CNG.
Each vehicle will display a rate card outlining prices and discounts based on destinations. Regular monitoring will be conducted to ensure the program’s success.
