The Lagos State Government has announced plans to hold a meeting with developers and owners of distressed buildings to discuss strategies for redesigning and remodeling these structures by November.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, shared this update during a recent event in Alahusa, Lagos, according to The Punch.
He expressed concern over the increasing number of distressed buildings across the state, emphasizing the need for urgent action from all stakeholders.
He said, “The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development as mandated by the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019, as amended, was willing to extend its responsibility for approving the remodelling of existing buildings to provide technical assistance to developers and owners of distressed buildings, especially on the design and remodelling of such buildings.
“Buildings have their lifespan and should be continuously maintained as the lifespan approaches rather than being left to degenerate to the level of distress and eventual collapse, which are inimical to a safe and sustainable environment.”
He noted that the upcoming strategic dialogue meeting could be a transformative opportunity for the sector, as it aims to provide technical support, offer viable alternatives to demolition, and address the issue of distressed buildings in the state.
The commissioner indicated that this meeting is expected to take place sometime in November.
