The Federal Inland Revenue Service has reaffirmed its commitment to improving tax compliance among Nigerian businesses by forming a strategic partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
This collaboration was emphasized during the opening ceremony of the 19th Abuja International Trade Fair, themed “Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,” which took place in Abuja on Monday, according to The Punch.
Commenting, FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, represented by Director of Tax Payers Services, Dr Lovette Ononuga praised ACCI for its continuous efforts to promote trade and foster collaboration among entrepreneurs.
“This event continues to highlight the strength and resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs,” Adedeji stated.
“Additionally, we believe that collaboration is key to advancing tax advocacy and promoting voluntary compliance. So our partnership with institutions such as the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry is crucial to raising awareness about the benefit of tax compliance in an economy.
“Working together, we help create a culture of compliance that not only strengthens the tax system but also contributes to the overall stability and predictability of the business environment,” she said.
Ononuga emphasised the importance of technology in simplifying tax compliance, noting, “Automation has simplified tax compliance, making it easier for businesses to thrive and pay taxes.”
She highlighted FIRS’s commitment to a customer-centric approach, focusing on equipping tax officials with the skills needed to effectively serve the public.
President of the ACCI, Chief Emeka Obegolu welcomed attendees and recognized the trade fair as a vital platform for connecting businesses.
He said, “The AITF has established itself as a premier multi-sectoral event in Nigeria, offering domestic and international exhibitors the opportunity to showcase new products and gain insights into evolving industry trends.”
“Efficient transportation options help businesses overcome logistical challenges, streamline supply chains, and reduce operational costs,” Obegolu added.
Meanwhile, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, Dele Oye praised the partnership and emphasized the need for effective policies that create a conducive business environment.
He stated, “The significance of efficient transportation networks, accessible trade finance solutions, and fair taxation policies cannot be overstated as we seek to position Nigeria as a leader in regional and global commerce.”
The fair, spanning 12 days, features over 500 exhibitors presenting more than 10,000 products and services.
