Apple has initiated an aggressive discounting campaign on its official Tmall platform in China, offering price cuts of up to 2,300 yuan ($318) on selected iPhone models.
The move aims to fortify the U.S. tech giant’s foothold in the premium smartphone market, where it faces escalating competition from local contenders like Huawei.
Spanning from May 20 to May 28, this discounting initiative surpasses the previous campaign Apple rolled out in February. Unlike the earlier offer, which featured maximum discounts of 1,150 yuan, this promotion doubles the discounts, with the highest markdown applicable to the 1TB iPhone 15 Pro Max model. Other iPhone variants also witness substantial price reductions.
For example, Reuters’ investigation on Monday revealed a discount of 1,400 yuan on the 128 GB version of the base iPhone 15 model. Apple’s heightened competitive stance is in response to Huawei’s recent unveiling of its latest line of premium smartphones, the Pura 70, following the Mate 60 launch last August.
Apple’s earlier discounting endeavor in February appeared to have bolstered the company’s sales momentum in China. Shipments surged by 12% in March, a noteworthy turnaround from the 37% sales decline experienced in the initial two months of 2024, as per Reuters’ analysis based on data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.
