Microsoft has announced that the co-founders of the ChatGPT startup, OpenAI, who were fired, have joined Microsoft.
The Times reported that the CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, declared on Monday that the company would be taking in the two OpenAI management teams as well as the colleagues who left the AI startup to protest Altman’s dismissal.
This occurred just three days following the OpenAI board drama that resulted in the co-founders’ termination.
The former OpenAI members will head a “new advanced AI research team” within Microsoft, according to Nadella.
Even so, he stated that Microsoft would keep working with OpenAI and that he was ready to collaborate with the newly selected executive team.
In a message released on his X handle, Nadella announced the absorption of Altman and Brockman.
“We are steadfast in our dedication to the OpenAI partnership, confident in our product roadmap, our capacity for innovation in light of everything we revealed at Microsoft Ignite, and our ability to serve our partners and customers.” We are excited to collaborate with Emmett Shear and the new leadership group at OAI.
“We are thrilled to announce that Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and associates will be joining Microsoft to spearhead a new advanced artificial intelligence research team. We are eager to get started as soon as possible to give them the tools they require for success.”
According to a statement released by OpenAI on Friday, Altman “was not consistently honest in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities,” according to the board’s deliberate review process. As a result, the board no longer trusts him to manage OpenAI going forward.
Thereafter, Altman posted on X to announce his resignation, although he didn’t include any details.
On the other hand, the outgoing chairman, Greg Brockman, revealed the circumstances surrounding their departure and expressed surprise at the board’s choice. Brockman claimed that they were taken out without any prior notification.
Meanwhile, OpenAI’s board has hired former Twitch chief Emmett Shear as chief executive officer to replace Altman. Shear stepped down as CEO of Amazon’s game-streaming site Twitch earlier this year.
Those with knowledge of the nomination claim that Shear won over directors by seeming to understand the existential risks that artificial intelligence posed.
Shear is regarded as having the heft to oversee a major engineering organization, having spent more than a decade establishing Twitch into one of the world’s most popular video platforms.
