The International Trade Fair complex in the Ojo region of Lagos State has had its illegal constructions sealed by the Lagos State Government.
The Punch reported that the state government said in a statement on Wednesday that this was carried out following a special enforcement operation that was earlier conducted under the direction of the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide.
It was also mentioned that the commissioner claimed that the Lagos Trade Fair complex was well-known for having all kinds of illegal constructions while overseeing the sealing and partial removal of block works from several unauthorized buildings.
“The enforcement exercise on the trade fair complex also affected under-construction structures, including those built on drainage alignments,” the statement read.
The commissioner condemned the pattern of building without permission, particularly at the trade fair complex where developers had refused to budge after years of stop-work orders and letters being served.
He said that even though the trade fair complex was located on federal property, developers were still required to acquire planning permission from the Lagos State Government because state governments were expressly given responsibility for planning in the 2003 Supreme Court ruling.
