TrueCaller appoints Nigerian country manager

TrueCaller, the leading worldwide caller ID platform, has appointed Ogochukwu Onwuzurike as its new Nigeria country manager.

The Times reported that this is a part of Truecaller’s drive to broaden its business in Colombia and Nigeria, which it refers to as “growth markets.”

The Chairman of Truecaller, Nami Zarringhalam, announced the newly hired Country Managers for Nigeria and Colombia in a statement.

According to Zarringhalam’s statement, “I’m happy to welcome Nicolás and Ogochukwu to the Truecaller team. Our ambitious ambitions will benefit immensely from the amount of experience Ogo and Nicolás bring with them. In Nigeria and Colombia, we’ve always desired to integrate local knowledge and regional experience and i am now confident that this will enhance our capabilities.”

The country manager for Nigeria for Truecaller, Ogochukwu Onwuzurike, was formerly the sales director for Africa at the identity verification company MetaMap.

She had previously been a Business Development Manager for emerging markets at Interswitch. As an executive trainee at Zenith Bank, she began her career in banking.

Indians started Truecaller, a company based in Stockholm, Sweden, with a primary focus on the Indian market. However, during the past few years, the company has seen an increase in the number of its customers outside of India; over 100 million of these users were active each month outside of India during the most recent quarter.

Government officials in Nigeria are investigating the Truecaller app for “potential breaches to the privacy rights of Nigerians.”

The National Information Technology Development Agency claimed that key rules specified in Nigeria’s Data Protection Regulation were broken by the app’s privacy policy in 2019.

Later on in the year, the Director General of NITDA,  Kashifu Inuwa, said, “Truecaller would align its operations with Nigeria’s data legislation.”

However, with the implementation of the Nigerian Data Protection Act in 2023, the landscape of data rights has changed since then.

Truecaller made the strategic decision to recruit a country manager in Nigeria in order to increase the company’s presence in that country.

Additionally, by taking this action, Truecaller is able to create a dedicated liaison in one of its important African markets. The duties of the country manager would include monitoring all aspects of the Truecaller app’s activities in Nigeria and ensuring compliance with the legal and regulatory framework established by Nigerian law.
