Operators seek US aid in port control training

The Nigerian Chamber of Shipping has encouraged the US to train personnel from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency on the country’s Port State Control system.

The Punch reported that the president of NCS, Aminu Umar, made this call on Thursday in Lagos while he was hosting Lieutenant Commander Patrick Moon, the marine advisor, and the economic adviser, Ms. Jordan LaChance, both from the US Consulate in Lagos.

After the meeting, Umar spoke to the media and urged the group to arrange for PSC training with the Nigerian regulatory institutions.

The best PSC practices in the world, he continued, are practiced in the United States.

We encouraged the US team to work with the Nigerian regulatory bodies to provide PSC training because the US has some of the greatest PSC practices in the world, he continued.

They can teach Nigeria a lot, and NCS would like to help them do that. We support this alliance and stand ready to participate in discussions whenever needed.

The chamber would like to see the US team provide NIMASA with the necessary training, according to Umar, who is also the chief executive of Sea Transport Services Nigeria Limited.

According to him, the training would help the organization meet international requirements, particularly for the application of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code, which was considered when the US Coast Guards visited NIMASA headquarters recently.

Umar pledged to work with NIMASA to improve their relationship with the US team.

According to Moon, the Nigerian maritime industry actively participates in guaranteeing safe and secure shipping in a global industry that has an impact on people all over the world.

“One of the reasons the US Coast Guard was asked to come to Nigeria is to provide that connection and greater understanding between the Nigerian maritime industry and regulators with the US mission,” he said.
