Sony Music Entertainment has dropped its lawsuit against Triller over claims the short-form video platform exploited the label’s music without authorization.
Sony Music and Triller informed the Manhattan federal court on Friday that they will drop the copyright complaint with prejudice, which prevents a subsequent filing.
Triller agreed to pay more than $4.5 million to settle a portion of the lawsuit in April for allegedly breaking a contract with the label.
Last year, Los Angeles-based Triller was sued by Sony Music. It accused the TikTok competitor of broking a licencing agreement by neglecting to make payments and had been streaming the music without a licence ever since, which constituted “massive” copyright infringement.
Triller is accused of misusing more than 50 songs, including those of Britney Spears, Harry Styles, and Janis Joplin, according to the lawsuit.
At the time, a Triller representative stated that the allegation “grossly mischaracterizes”” their relationship and that Sony Music’s catalogue had been withdrawn from the platform. Later, Triller refuted Sony Music’s claims in court.
