Verified users on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, can now hide their verification checkmarks.
“As a subscriber, you can choose to hide your checkmark on your account. The check mark will be hidden on your profile and posts. The checkmark may still appear in some places and some features could still reveal you have an active subscription. Some features may not be available while your checkmark is hidden. We will continue to evolve this feature to make it better for you,” Twitter support page reads
Paid verification was launched by the Elon Musk-owned business last year with the Twitter Blue redesign. XBlue was given to the service as part of the continuing rebranding process.
The platform has revised the ‘About Twitter Blue’ support page for premium subscribers, stating that even if you conceal the checkmark it might still be visible in some areas. The business provided no additional information regarding those stand-ins.
Paid verification caused a lot of controversy because it was difficult to tell the difference between users who had paid for the checkmark and users who had legacy verified accounts of famous persons.
Twitter eliminated legacy checkmarks in April, but then brought them back for top accounts—even if they hadn’t paid for them.
In order to encourage users to submit more content on the site, the firm has included features like a 10,000 character limit for posts, a 3-hour video upload limit, fewer advertisements on the timeline, and most recently ad revenue sharing for subscription users.
