Mission Impossible actor Simon Pegg, has stated that artificial intelligence has qualified support in the making of films and television shows.
According to the British actor and author, the danger of AI could in fact be advantageous in pushing back against subpar concepts and works by inspiring people to set higher standards for themselves.
“It might be a good thing in that it will stop us from being mediocre. There is a lot of mediocrity out there sometimes. Things that pass for entertainment are not quite as good as they should be” Pegg said.
Pegg, who co-wrote and starred in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, asserted that having AI as a rival could, inadvertently, improve the calibre of what eventually makes it to our screens.
In the newest Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Pegg, who plays Benji Dunn alongside Tom Cruise, claimed that when it comes to the creative process of filmmaking itself, AI lacks the emotion, empathy, and imagination necessary to produce high-quality work.
His remarks came after members of the Writers Guild of America, American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Screen Actors Guild walked off the set in protest of requests for more compensation and guarantees that their profession would not be rendered obsolete by artificial intelligence.
