The National Identity Management Commission registered and issued National Identity Numbers to a total of 22,492,748 Nigerians in 2022, a reduction of 16.85% from the 27,052,148 in 2021.
The National Bureau of Statistics published a study on Monday under the title “National Identity Registration Statistics 2022” on the NBS website.
The 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory had 22,237,022 registrations and NIN issued in the year under review, while 255,726 of the total registrations were from Nigerians living abroad.
9,849,185 women registered and received NINs out of the total registrants, while 12,643,563 men did.
The top five states with the highest number of registrations and issuance of identity numbers, were Kano (2,444,224), Lagos (2,097,912), Kaduna (1,256,479), Katsina (1,156,149), and Ogun (1,075,942); while the least five states with registrations and issuance of identity number were Bayelsa (100,525), Ekiti (141,534), Ebonyi (165,375), Cross-River (268,904) and Kogi (308,681).
The South-West zone issued the most NINs (7,207,695), followed by the North-West (4,825,143), and the South-East (1,793,373) in 2022. The North-West zone issued the fewest NINs (1,793,373).
“Niger State had the highest number of registrations and NINs granted in the North-Central with 368,131 males and 229,047 females.
Kogi State, in comparison, had the fewest registrations and NINs granted, with 163,721 men and 144,960 women, according to the study.
The biggest number of registrations and NINs granted in the North-East were in Bauchi State (476,042 males and 288,184 females), while Taraba State had the lowest number of registrations and NINs issued (202,471 males and 132,470 females).
Zamfara State had the fewest registrations and NINs granted, with 358,029 males and 125,228 females. Kano State had the greatest registrations and NINs issued in the North-West, with 1,322,194 males and 1,122,030 females.
According to the data, Abia State had the greatest number of registrations and NINs granted in the South-East zone, with 359,119 males and 154,375 females. There were 90,346 males and 75,029 females in Ebonyi State, which had the fewest registrations and NINs granted in the zone.
“With 338,291 male and 310,198 female registrations and NINs granted in 2022, Rivers State set a record for the South-South. Bayelsa state, on the other hand, had the fewest registrations and NINs granted, with 58,063 men and 42,462 women.
“With 1,104,042 males and 993,870 females, Lagos State had the most registrations and NINs granted in the South-West. With 76,199 males and 65,335 females registered, Ekiti State had the fewest NINs issued and registrations overall, according to the data.”
