X’s engineering director Haofei Wang departs company

The director of engineering at X, Haofei Wang, has abruptly left the company, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Wang, who joined Elon Musk’s X in July 2023, played a key leadership role and often served as a bridge between Musk and the company’s engineering team. In recent months, he was regarded internally as X’s de facto head of engineering and product, particularly as Musk shifted focus toward his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, and his interest in cryptocurrency, DOGE.

The reason for Wang’s departure remains unclear. Neither he nor a company spokesperson provided comment.

X has recently bolstered its engineering leadership, bringing in Mike Dalton and Uday Ruddaraju, both former technical leads at Robinhood, in January. Their LinkedIn profiles indicate that they also work at xAI, highlighting the deepening ties between the two Musk-led ventures.

Meanwhile, X’s business appears to be stabilizing, buoyed by the rising prominence of xAI and Musk’s growing political influence. The company recently secured a $44 billion valuation—matching the price Musk paid when he acquired Twitter in 2022.

While Musk remains an active presence on the platform, his involvement in X’s leadership has become increasingly divided, particularly since he began publicly supporting former U.S. President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign last summer.
