Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, xAI, has sued Apple and OpenAI in a Texas federal court, alleging the companies conspired to stifle competition in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector.
The lawsuit, seeking billions in damages, highlights antitrust concerns over Apple’s integration of ChatGPT into its operating systems.
xAI claims that Apple and OpenAI have controlled key markets to protect their monopolies, blocking innovators like X and xAI from competing.
“If not for its exclusive deal with OpenAI, Apple would have no reason to refrain from more prominently featuring the X app and the Grok app in its App Store,” the lawsuit said.
xAI claims that the exclusive arrangement between Apple and OpenAI is blocking rivals from gaining visibility and market share, effectively limiting competition in the AI market.
Musk, who bought X in March for $33 billion to bolster xAI’s chatbot training capabilities, used his social media platform to underscore the claims made in the lawsuit.
“A million reviews with 4.9 average for @Grok and still Apple refuses to mention Grok on any lists,” he posted on X.
Earlier this month, Musk accused Apple of giving preferential treatment to OpenAI on its App Store, claiming the iPhone maker’s ranking system prevents other developers, including his AI company, xAI Holdings, from reaching the top spot.
He alleged in a post that Apple’s practices amount to “playing politics.”
“Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action,” Musk posted.
