X unveils standalone private messaging app

Social media platform X is spinning off its private messaging feature, X Chat, into a standalone application.

On Monday, the company announced that an initial beta version of the app had been released to 1,000 users via Apple’s TestFlight platform.

The beta slots were filled within two hours of the announcement.

In a post on X, xAI product designer, Michael Boswell, said the company plans to expand access beyond the first 1,000 users soon, but did not provide a timeline.

“For the past few months, we’ve been quietly building a standalone X Chat app for iOS,” Boswell wrote on X. “Use it. Break it. We want your feedback,” he said.

X Chat is an enhanced version of X’s existing direct messaging feature, which the company says offers end-to-end encryption.

However, security experts have cautioned that the service may not be as secure as other encrypted messaging platforms, such as Signal, and have advised users to exercise caution.

It remains unclear whether X has addressed those security concerns in the standalone version of the app.
