X, previously known as Twitter, announced on Tuesday the introduction of support for passkeys, a newer and more secure method of logging in compared to traditional passwords.

This feature will soon be available to U.S. users on iOS devices. This technology is gaining popularity and has been integrated into various apps recently, including PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, and more.

The development of passkey technology is a collaborative effort involving Google, Apple, Microsoft, the FIDO Alliance, and the World Wide Web Consortium. The objective is to facilitate passwordless logins that are compatible across various devices, operating systems, and web browsers.

This feature was rolled out for iOS devices in September 2022 and became available for Google accounts in the previous May. Differing from the conventional username and password login, passkeys employ biometric authentication methods like Face ID or Touch ID, a PIN, or a physical security key for verifying login attempts. This approach effectively merges the advantages of two-factor authentication into a single, more convenient, and secure step.

This update is particularly beneficial for X, especially considering the past high-profile security breaches that have compromised user accounts on the platform.

However, X has not yet specified a timeline for when this feature will be accessible on other platforms or in regions outside the U.S.
