Microblogging platform X, formerly known as Twitter has quietly removed the feature that allowed users to select NFT as their profile image.
This follows after Elon Musk’s X revealed a broad plan for the business in 2024 that included further AI-powered capabilities.
Amidst all of this, the functionality was first introduced in January 2022 under the former Twitter administration. During that period, NFTs produced on Ethereum (ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens) may be set as profile images by Twitter Blue subscribers.
Eventually, these NFTs appeared as hexagons. To learn more about NFTs, including specifics like a collection of the NFT, the contract address, TokenID, and the app that generated it, users may click or touch on the profile image.
On its X Premium support website, X has now deleted any information about the NFT profile image function.
Hexagonal avatars are still used by those whose profile image was originally set to an NFT. Whether X will eventually eliminate those as well is unknown.
The fact that other social networks have likewise concluded their NFT tests makes the feature’s removal not all that shocking. Both Facebook and Instagram began experimenting with publishing and displaying NFTs in 2022. However, in March 2023, Meta discontinued supporting NFTs.
