X launches feature to allow long-form articles for premium users

By Alex Omenye

X introduced a new long-form post format named Articles, exclusively available to Premium+ subscribers and verified organizations.

This feature allows users to publish posts with text formatting, incorporate other X posts, and embed videos and images, resembling a post on a WordPress-like content management system or an article on Medium.

The unveiling of this feature was made through a post on the platform by the company’s @Write account, introducing the capability with an actual article.

In the past year, Elon Musk’s social network extended the limit for long posts to 25,000 characters for paying users.

However, the limit for Articles appears notably higher at 100,000 characters, as observed by Engadget. Chris Bakke’s post highlights additional features, such as the ability to include bulleted lists and hyperlinked text. Bakke, the founder of job listing company Laskie, was acquired by X in the previous year.

Twitter initially introduced Notes as a long-form publishing medium in 2022, predating Musk’s ownership of the company. However, under Musk’s leadership, the Notes project was paused, ad-free articles were discontinued, and the newsletter platform Revenue was shut down. Despite these changes, Musk mentioned in July 2023 that the company was actively developing a method for creators to share long-form articles with mixed media. In response to a user inquiry about the newly named “Articles” feature, Musk expressed the vision for users to post extensive, intricate articles with mixed media, even suggesting the possibility of publishing a book on the platform.

Musk has consistently encouraged prominent creators like MrBeast and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson to publish directly on X. With the introduction of the Articles feature, the social media platform aims to attract writers interested in posting their long-form content directly on the platform.
