WordPress is now offering domains with a 100-year domain for sale for users who want their projects to outlive them.
In a blog post, the twenty-year-old company stated that this 100-year plan is perfect for families to preserve their history online and for founders to chronicle the development of their business.
“Whether it’s giving a newborn the special gift of a domain and lifetime home on the web, or something you put in your will to make sure your website and story are accessible to future generations, I hope this plan gets people and other companies thinking about building for the long term,” WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg said in a statement.
Although maintaining digital assets for a century sounds appealing, it requires a one-time payment of $38,000.
WordPress will give a domain a 100-year registration, automatic backup to numerous servers, including the Internet Archive, cutting-edge ownership and hosting capabilities, and round-the-clock support in exchange.
In its post, WordPress makes no mention of how it intends to maintain domains and backups current with the rapidly evolving internet landscape or of what would happen to the domains if the firm decided to discontinue the programme for any reason.
