The White House on Wednesday released a sweeping new artificial intelligence policy plan outlining strategic priorities for the United States to secure “global dominance” in the fast-evolving technology sector.
President Donald Trump’s administration is calling for a bold expansion of open-access AI tools, proposing that open-source and open-weight AI models be made freely available for global download, modification, and use by developers.
The plan reflects a broader effort by the U.S. to lead in AI innovation, outpace foreign competitors, and expand commercial and military advantages in a sector seen as central to 21st-century geopolitics.
In a pointed move aimed at U.S.-China tech tensions, the policy also directs the Commerce Department to conduct research into Chinese AI models, assessing whether they are aligned with the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda and censorship standards.
The blueprint further recommends that federal AI funding be withheld from U.S. states that impose “burdensome” regulations, which the administration argues could stifle innovation and economic growth.
The Trump administration has positioned AI leadership as a core national priority, framing the new policy as a counterweight to earlier restrictions imposed under former President Joe Biden. Wednesday’s announcement marks a continuation of Trump’s aggressive deregulatory approach and his pledge to keep the U.S. ahead in the global AI arms race.
