White House orders review of SpaceX contracts amid Trump–Musk feud

The White House has ordered a sweeping review of SpaceX’s federal contracts, amid a public fallout between President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.

The order, issued earlier this month, instructs the Pentagon and NASA to scrutinize SpaceX’s deals—worth approximately $22 billion—signaling potential retaliation against Musk and his companies.

The move follows Trump’s threat last week to reevaluate government ties with Musk after the entrepreneur publicly criticized the president and called for his impeachment.

Pentagon officials are now considering limiting SpaceX’s role in a new U.S. missile defense system. Meanwhile, the White House remains noncommittal about the future of existing contracts. “We’ll take a look at everything,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on June 6.

Neither SpaceX nor the Defense Department responded to requests for comment. NASA said it would continue working with industry partners to meet the president’s goals in space. A White House spokesperson declined to address Musk specifically, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to “a rigorous review process.”

Sources say the contract probe is meant to give the administration leverage should Trump choose to act against Musk, who was recently removed as head of the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency. “The review is for political ammunition,” one source told Reuters.

Critics warn that political vendettas could jeopardize national security. “It’s ironic that Musk’s contracts are now under the same kind of scrutiny he once championed,” said Scott Amey, of the Project on Government Oversight. “Decisions should be made in the public interest, not to serve personal disputes.”

SpaceX is central to key government operations, including astronaut transport to the International Space Station and a classified satellite network for the National Reconnaissance Office.
