WhatsApp has released a list of Android phones that will remain eligible to use its messaging platform, warning that devices falling short of the stated requirements could eventually be locked out of the app.

The company disclosed that its platform currently supports Android devices running Android 6.0 and any version above it.

WhatsApp also stipulated that a qualifying device must be able to receive SMS messages or phone calls, a function it said is essential for completing the account verification process.

Phones running Android versions older than Android 6.0 fall outside WhatsApp’s supported range and will not be able to use the app.

WhatsApp explained that it regularly discontinues support for outdated operating systems as part of its broader strategy to stay aligned with evolving technology and tightening security standards.

The company stated that ending support for older systems enables it to concentrate resources on newer platforms while preserving the app’s security and overall functionality.

WhatsApp further disclosed that users operating unsupported devices or operating systems will be duly notified of their status.

The platform added that affected users will receive repeated reminders urging them to upgrade their devices in order to retain uninterrupted access to the service.

WhatsApp said it will continue to review and update its published requirements as changes occur over time.

Android users have therefore been advised to check their phone’s operating system version as a way of confirming whether their device still meets WhatsApp’s current standards.
