After years of anticipation, Meta has finally released an official WhatsApp app for the Apple iPad, marking a major step forward for users of the world’s most popular messaging platform. The app is now available for download via the App Store.
Launched in 2009, WhatsApp astonishingly predates the iPad, which Apple introduced in 2010. For over a decade, iPad users have relied on workarounds or resized iPhone versions to access the app, but this new release brings a tailored experience optimized for tablet use.
The iPad version utilizes the device’s larger screen and multitasking capabilities. Features like Split View and Slide Over allow users to chat while browsing or using other apps. It’s also compatible with accessories such as the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, enhancing productivity and ease of use.
Functionality includes full support for video and audio calls — up to 32 participants — and integration with both front and rear cameras. Chat syncing across devices ensures users can seamlessly switch between their iPhone and iPad without missing a message.
While WhatsApp’s arrival on iPad has been a long time coming, attention now turns to Meta’s other major social platform. A dedicated Instagram app for iPad remains absent, though recent reports suggest it may finally be in development after 15 years of user demand.
