Walmart partners OpenAI to launch ChatGPT-powered shopping feature

Walmart quits advertising on X

Walmart announced Tuesday that it has partnered with OpenAI to enable shoppers to make faster purchases directly through the ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot.

The move aims to keep the retail giant and largest United States grocer in step with shifting consumer habits, as more shoppers now turn to AI tools like ChatGPT for gift ideas, product recommendations, and the best deals, alongside social media and retailer suggestions.

“For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a news release. ”

He said the new AI feature will be “multimedia, personalized, and contextual,” adding that Walmart is “moving toward a more enjoyable and convenient shopping future.”

Walmart did not specify when customers will be able to start purchasing its products through ChatGPT.

OpenAI first unveiled the Instant Checkout feature in late September, announcing that it would initially support single-item purchases from Etsy sellers.

The company said more than one million Shopify merchants, including brands like Skims and Glossier, would be added soon, with Walmart now joining the rollout.
