VIDEO: Third Mainland Bridge blocked as Lagosians protest house demolition

Lagos residents, on Monday morning, staged a protest on the inward lane of the Third Mainland Bridge, over the demolition of houses in Oworonshoki by the state government.

The protest, which began at dawn, triggered a major traffic gridlock, forcing motorists and commuters to seek alternative routes into the mainland.

A large number of residents alleged that the state government carried out the demolition without proper notice or compensation, leaving several families homeless.

The demolition exercise, which commenced in the early hours of Saturday, was carried out by a joint enforcement team targeting unapproved structures along the Lekki and Iyana Oworonshoki coastal lines.

During the demonstration, protesters confronted the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, insisting they would not vacate the bridge until the demolition machinery was withdrawn from Oworonshoki. Security personnel were eventually deployed to disperse the protesters and restore calm, allowing traffic to flow again on the blocked lane.
