The African Water Facility has received a $3 million commitment from the United States Agency for International Development.
According to Nairametrics, this was stated in a press release published on the website of the African Development Bank.
A statement in the funding agreement revealed that the facility will support the planning of water and sanitation investment projects in Africa by giving grants and technical help to African nations and regional economic communities.
“The African Development Bank is the home of the African Water Facility, a project of the African Ministers Council on Water. It is the first institution in Africa dedicated completely to addressing the continent’s water and sanitation problems.
It aids African countries in achieving the goals and targets outlined in the African Water Vision 2025 and the water-related Sustainable Development Goals.
And it accomplishes this by planning cutting-edge water and sanitization projects across the continent.
It stated that Sub-Saharan Africa still has limited access to clean water and sanitation. “Over 700 million people lack access to proper sanitation, while about 400 million lack basic water supply services.
“About 750 million people lack access to hygiene, and about 200 million people still practice open defecation.
“Achieving water security and sanitation for all requires large-scale investment in water supply and sanitation, improved governance of water resources and operations, and the design of climate-resilient infrastructure,” the statement read.
According to the AfDB, the organization has given grants totaling 205 million euros to water and sanitation projects in Africa since its founding.
Additionally, it claimed to have made possible investments worth over 1.7bn euros in the water and sanitation industry.
The Vice President of the AfDB for Agriculture, Human, and Social Development, Dr. Beth Dunford, commended the organization for the funds.
