The White House announced on Wednesday that it is raising tariffs on India by an additional 25 per cent, doubling the total duties on the key U.S. trading partner to 50 per cent.
“I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” President Donald Trump said in an executive order.
“Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent,” the executive order reads.
According to the order, the new tariffs will take effect in 21 days, while the previously announced 25% duties are scheduled to begin on Thursday.
With the latest hike, Trump’s tariff rate on India is now among the highest imposed on any U.S. trading partner.
The move signals his intent to follow through on threats to penalize countries purchasing Russian oil, amid heightened rhetoric in recent weeks over President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
On Tuesday, Trump stated he would “very substantially” raise tariffs on India within 24 hours, accusing the country of “buying Russian oil” and “fueling the war machine.”
