US, China resume trade talks as TikTok deadline looms

TikTok removes more Universal Music songs as conflict worsens

United States and Chinese officials will continue trade talks in Spain on Monday, with attention fixed on the looming deadline for ByteDance to divest TikTok or face a US ban.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng are leading the negotiations, which represent the latest effort to ease trade frictions between Washington and Beijing.

Their last meeting in July produced a 90-day extension of the tariff truce, now set to expire on November 10.

TikTok remains a flashpoint.

President Donald Trump, who once pushed for the app’s ban, has since delayed enforcement three times.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said, “We may let [TikTok] die. Or we may… I don’t know. It depends. Up to China, it doesn’t matter too much.”

While national security concerns have fueled pressure on ByteDance, Trump has recently downplayed those risks as “highly overrated,” a shift that followed his surge in popularity on TikTok during the 2024 election campaign.

The outcome of both the trade talks and TikTok’s future will be closely watched by investors, with potential implications for technology markets and broader US-China economic ties.
