Unilever Nigeria celebrates World Cleanup Day

Employees of Unilever Nigeria collaborated with Wecyclers and the Food & Beverage Recycling Alliance to recognize World Clean-Up Day 2023 as part of the company’s commitment to making sustainable living the norm.

The Punch reported that according to a statement, the exercise was recently held in the Surulere, Lagos, campus of the Obele Nursery and Primary School.

The company said in a statement that the workers cleaned the trash cans and gave them to the school as a way to inspire the students to adopt excellent hygiene habits and maintain a clean environment through proper waste disposal.

“The World Clean-Up Day is a global initiative that brings people from all walks of life together to clean up their communities,” said the Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainable Business at Unilever Nigeria, Godfrey Adejumoh, in response to a question about the program.

In keeping with the 2023 theme of Embody Unity, Unilever Nigeria employees and partners helped to clean up the school’s grounds in order to make the day special for the students and teachers at Obele Nursery and Primary School.

The  National Finance Director of Unilever Nigeria, Folake Ogundipe, also spoke during the event. He said, “The purpose of celebrating World Clean-Up Day was to educate people on correct waste management procedures and how to turn trash into wealth. More importantly, this celebration fits with Unilever Nigeria’s mission as a business.

We are here today because we care about our world, the environment, and the people. The head of human resources and partnerships, Esther Chibuenyin-Fagbo, remarked.

“The work we are doing today is in line with Unilever’s core values, which include improving the health of the earth, peoples’ health, confidence, and wellbeing, and creating a world that is more equitable and socially inclusive.”

Chibuenyin-Fagbo emphasized the need to educate the public about recycling waste and converting it into wealth, saying all that was required of them was to gather their recyclable materials including plastic, paper, cans, cardboard, and bottles, and take them to any of Wecyclers’ recycling hubs nearby in exchange for money.
