UK’s M&S sends 200 agency workers home amid cyberattack disruptions

United Kingdom fashion company, Marks & Spencer, has instructed around 200 agency workers at its Castle Donington distribution centre to stay home due to the ongoing impact of a cyberattack.

The attack has disrupted operations at the retailer’s major logistics hub, highlighting the challenges it faces as it deals with the unfolding crisis, according to Sky News.

Agency staff account for approximately 20% of the workforce at M&S’s Castle Donington site.

However, the retailer’s permanent employees have been instructed to report to work as usual, despite the ongoing disruptions caused by the cyberattack.

“There is work for them to do,” It said.

M&S revealed last week that it had suspended online orders due to the cyberattack but has not provided many details about the incident.

In a recent update on Friday to investors, the company confirmed that while online orders are halted, customers can still browse the product range online, and its stores remain open to serve customers.

“We continue to manage the incident proactively and the M&S team – supported by leading experts – is working extremely hard to restore online operations and continue to serve customers well,” it added.

The duration of the disruption to M&S’s e-commerce operations is still unclear, though retail executives have described the cyberattack as “extensive” and noted it may take time to fully resolve.

M&S’s shares dropped another 2.4% on Monday morning, adding to a sharp decline last week, as investors reacted to the lack of positive news about the incident.

M&S declined to provide any additional comments.
