The data protection authority for Britain announced on Tuesday that it will investigate Worldcoin, a project by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in which users trade their iris scans for a digital ID and free cryptocurrency.
“We note the launch of WorldCoin in the UK and will be making further enquiries,” a spokesperson for the Information Commissioner’s Office told Reuters.
With two million users from its trial, Worldcoin began on Monday. The cryptocurrency initiative expanded its eyeball-scanning operations in 20 nations, including at locations in London.
The project, which calls itself a “new identity and financial network,” gives anyone who sign up a digital ID that it claims will help distinguish humans from robots.
The Worldcoin token, the company’s cryptocurrency, will be distributed to individuals who register in certain nations, the website claims.
