UK probes into Apple, Google over smartphone ecosystems

The United Kingdom has launched an investigation into Apple and Google’s dominance in smartphone operating systems, app stores, and web browsers, marking the second use of its expanded regulatory powers to scrutinize major tech companies.

The Competition and Markets Authority announced on Thursday that it would evaluate whether Apple and Google hold “strategic market status” within smartphone ecosystems. The probe will assess the impact of their control on both users and businesses developing apps and services.

CMA Chief Executive Sarah Cardell emphasized the potential benefits of fostering greater competition in mobile ecosystems. “More competitive mobile ecosystems could drive innovation and create new opportunities across services millions of people rely on, whether in app stores, browsers, or operating systems,” she said.

Cardell also highlighted the potential economic benefits for the UK. “Better competition could boost growth, enabling businesses to offer innovative products and services on Apple’s and Google’s platforms,” she added.

The investigation reflects growing global scrutiny of tech giants’ influence over critical digital infrastructure and their ability to shape market dynamics.
