UK cargo ship hit by projectile in Strait of Hormuz

A cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by an unidentified projectile, sparking a fire onboard, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported Wednesday morning. morning.

The incident forced the ship’s crew, whose vessel has not been named, to evacuate.

UKMTO warned other vessels to navigate cautiously and report any suspicious activity as investigations continue.

The incident occurred 11 nautical miles north of Oman in the Strait of Hormu.

Shipping through the strategically important strait has nearly halted since U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran on Feb. 28.

In response, Iran has targeted vessels attempting to transit the waterway, with several attacks reported in recent days.

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, through which about 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas usually flows.
