Uber to invest $100m in autonomous vehicle charging stations

Uber Technologies said on Wednesday it plans to invest more than $100 million to build autonomous vehicle charging hubs, highlighting the company’s latest effort to expand its self-driving operations.

The initiative will involve installing DC fast-charging stations at autonomous depots used for daily fleet management, as well as at strategic pit stops across key cities.

The United States tech giant has made autonomous vehicles a central strategic priority, partnering with more than 20 companies worldwide on self-driving freight, delivery, and ride-hailing services as it competes for market share against rivals such as Tesla.

The charging network rollout will begin in the United States, starting with the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Dallas, before expanding to additional cities over time.

Uber Technologies is also partnering with charging network operators across global markets to establish “utilization guarantee agreements,” including collaborations with EVgo in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston; Electra in Paris and Madrid; and IONITY alongside Hubber in London.

The agreements are expected to support the deployment of hundreds of new chargers across these cities, particularly in areas where charging demand is highest.

The company currently offers robotaxi services on its platform in four U.S. cities, as well as in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh.

Uber has partnered with autonomous driving firms, including Waymo, owned by Alphabet, and WeRide, to support its self-driving fleet operations.
