A hacking and extortion group has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack and data breach targeting Uber Freight, the logistics subsidiary of ride-hailing giant Uber.

Uber Freight confirmed the incident but said its operations were not affected, with its systems continuing to function normally.

The company is the latest transportation business reportedly targeted by the Helix hacking group, which has carried out a series of cyberattacks against transportation companies, financial institutions and private equity firms in recent months.

The group is known for breaching corporate cloud environments and exfiltrating large volumes of data before threatening to publish the stolen information unless victims pay a ransom.

In a post on its data leak website, Helix claimed it had stolen email mailboxes, cloud storage drives, accounts-payable files and dispatch documents belonging to Uber Freight.

Uber Freight has not disclosed whether it received a ransom demand from the hackers or whether any payment was made.

Google said earlier this week that Helix is part of a broader hacking collective it tracks as UNC6671. The group reportedly uses social engineering techniques, including voice phishing, in which attackers contact IT helpdesks and attempt to persuade staff to reset employee passwords.

Cybersecurity researchers have warned that such attacks, despite relying on relatively simple tactics, can be highly effective because they exploit human error to gain access to corporate systems and sensitive information.

The incident highlights the growing cybersecurity risks facing logistics and transportation companies, which increasingly rely on cloud-based systems and digital platforms to manage shipments, payments and other critical operations.
