United Bank for Africa Plc has been named African Bank of the Year at The Banker Magazine’s 2023 Bankers Awards, a subsidiary of the Financial Times of London.
According to The Punch, a statement on Sunday revealed that the UBA Group took home nine prizes from the event.
In addition to winning Bank of the Year Africa, the bank’s subsidiaries won Bank of the Year in eight of the twenty African nations in which it conducts business.
UBA Cameroon, UBA Chad, UBA Ghana, UBA Cote d’Ivoire, UBA Mozambique, UBA Congo, UBA Sierra Leone, and UBA Tanzania are among the winning subsidiaries.
The statement read, “UBA has won the regional award as the best bank in Africa for the second time in the last three years. It came out on top in 2021.
The Group Managing Director of UBA, Oliver Alawuba, accepted the prizes on behalf of the banking group and conveyed his appreciation and enthusiasm for them.
Alawuba said the awards served as a means of affirmation and acknowledgment that the lender was on course to achieve its objectives of strengthening its position as the continent’s leading lender and generating exceptional value for all of its stakeholders.
“UBA is honoured to receive the overall Award for Africa and to be named the Bank of the Year in these eight countries,” he stated.
“This success is a result of the UBA team’s collective hard work, devotion, and inventive spirit. We are still dedicated to providing our clients around the continent with excellent financial services that make a positive difference in their lives. We owe this to our many thousands of employees as well as our millions of consumers worldwide. They are the main cause of our continued success and the recognition we get.”
The Editor of the Banker, Joy Macknight, praised UBA as a clear winner across a wide range of criteria, having performed impressively across its footprint with a strong financial performance across most of its markets.
Joy Macknight had earlier spoken about UBA’s consistent excellence in the financial services sector throughout the African continent.
Macknight stated, “In a year of strong competition among the continent’s major banking groups, UBA has gained the edge on its rivals to win the Bank of the Year award for Africa for the 2nd time in three years. Congratulations. The award recognises the bank’s strength across Africa, including many of its most competitive markets.”
