Turkey’s competition on Monday, the authority implemented an interim measure targeting Meta Platforms Inc.
This measure aims to impede data sharing between the Instagram and Threads platforms while the authority conducts an investigation into potential abuse of Meta’s dominant market position.
Initiated in December, the investigation scrutinizes Meta, the parent company of Facebook, over potential competition law violations related to the integration of its social media platforms Instagram and the newer Threads.
The interim measure is slated to remain in effect until a final decision is reached. The authority cites concerns that data amalgamated through these platforms could infringe competition law and inflict irreparable harm on the market.
Additionally, the Turkish authority levied a fine of 4.8 million lira ($148,000) per day on Meta in a separate investigation. This inquiry centers on a notification message sent by the company to users regarding data-sharing practices.
According to the authority, the notification fails to furnish adequate information and lacks transparency regarding data sharing between Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp services. Moreover, the notification appears to encourage users to consent to data sharing, a measure deemed insufficient to address anti-competition apprehensions.
