Trump opens TikTok account amid pending ban deadline

The White House has opened an official TikTok account even as President Donald Trump faces a looming deadline to resolve the app’s uncertain future in the United States.

The account, @WhiteHouse, posted its first video Tuesday evening, highlighting Trump’s achievements, despite ongoing legal and political questions over whether TikTok can continue to operate in the country.

Under a law signed last year by then-President Joe Biden, TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance must sell its U.S. stake or face a nationwide ban. Trump, who inherited enforcement of the law when he took office in January, has repeatedly delayed its implementation. The current deadline for a deal is September 17.

So far, TikTok has been shut down in the United States for only a single day. Enforcement was delayed three times this year — in January, when Trump issued a 75-day extension upon taking office; in April, after a prospective sale collapsed amid trade tensions with China; and again in June, when Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping was open to a resolution if a buyer could be found.

Trump’s relationship with TikTok has shifted significantly since his failed 2020 attempt to ban the app. During his 2024 re-election campaign, the Trump team launched its own account, @TeamTrump, which quickly outperformed Democratic rival Kamala Harris’s campaign on the platform, amassing 2.8 billion views compared with Harris’s 2.2 billion, according to journalist Kyle Tharp.

Republican digital strategists credit Trump’s knack for viral content with his dominance on the app. “TikTok is primarily an entertainment app, and our usage of it was just significantly more savvy than the Democrats,” one operative said.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the new account, calling TikTok “a powerful tool” for reaching Americans. “Why would I want to get rid of TikTok?” Trump himself wrote in January.
