Trump files $15b defamation suit against New York Times

United States President Donald Trump has filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the New York Times, accusing the newspaper of serving as a “mouthpiece” for the Democratic Party and publishing “false and defamatory content.”

The Florida court filing, submitted Monday night, cites multiple articles and a book by two Times journalists published ahead of the 2024 election, according to The Guardian.

The suit follows reporting on a crude birthday note given to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which bears Trump’s signature.

The president denies authoring the note.

Trump previously launched legal action against the Wall Street Journal and its owner Rupert Murdoch over coverage of the same note, which included a lewd drawing.

“The Times has betrayed the journalistic ideals of honesty, objectivity, and accuracy that it once professed,” it states.

He also accused the NYT of being “a leading, and unapologetic, purveyor of falsehoods against President Trump”.

The lawsuit claims the New York Times and other “legacy media” outlets viewed as opponents engaged in election interference, citing the paper’s endorsement of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the last presidential race.

By contrast, several major outlets, including The Washington Post, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, opted not to endorse any candidate—a rare departure from traditional election coverage.

The New York Times has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
